We take Jesus’ words seriously: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself (Mark 12:31)
Fincastle United Methodist Church has placed a red Blessing Box on the front of the gray cinder block building that is next to its Family Life Center (FLC) and across the street from the Health Department on Academy Street.
The Blessing Box is stocked by donations with shelf-stable food items as well as basic toiletries FREE to be taken by anyone in need. The perception is that an unusually large number of people are hurting now. Many people in our community are willing to help. This is meant to be anonymous and honor-system based. No one needs to sign up or qualify; they just drive past, stop and take what they need.
We need your help in spreading the word about the Blessing Box.
Here is a link to a flyer that may be downloaded and used to help spread the word: Blessing Box Flyer
How else can you help?
Shelf-stable food items and toiletries may be dropped off at the Family Life Center or, if there is room, placed directly in the Blessing Box. The Family Life Center is open Tuesday and Thursday from 9:30 AM to 1:00 PM.
A monetary donation may be made to Fincastle United Methodist Church with “Blessing Box” in the memo line.
Below is a list of examples of items that might be donated.
Shelf-stable food items: instant/boxed meals (mac & cheese, ramen, etc.); snack foods (crackers, Goldfish, etc.); rice/cereal/oatmeal/pasta; peanut and nut butters; nuts, dried fruit and raisins, trail mix; canned goods (soups, beans, fruit, canned tuna, etc.), spices, and cooking oils.
Basic toiletries: shampoo and conditioner, toothbrushes and toothpaste, bars of soap, feminine hygiene products, laundry detergent, deodorant, toilet paper/paper towels.
As it says on the doors:
Take what you need — Leave what you can
“Blessing Box” means that those who leave items are blessed enough to be able to do so, and those who to take items, are blessed that the items are there to take.
